Taking your garden indoors is easy and fun. With Urban Garden Wholesales help you can achieve huge healthy harvest of your favorite fruits and vegetables. If you need any further assistance please email us.

Indoor gardening can be done in any location with great results. Indoor crops grow extremely fast since they receive more sunny days than a plant outside does. You only need a 4ft x 4ft area for 600watt and a 6ft x 6ft area for 1000watt. Many will place the light in the corner of a room and use 2 inch foam for the third and maybe a fourth wall.

Mylar is placed on all the walls just above dirt level to reflect and use as much of the light as possible. When using electricity now a days you need to be as efficient as possible.

Fans are strategically placed to move air around without whipping the plant all over the place (Occilating fans from your local store work fine). An exhaust fan (usually centrifigul) is placed high in the room to remove hot spent air, if your room is set up right you can use the exhaust fan to draw fresh air in though a location on the other side of the room, again its all about efficency.

Gardeners have to decide whether to add a charcoal filter to their exhaust fan to remove odors caused by stinky organic fertilizers. Under the light will be either a soil or hydro based garden. We suggest those that are new to gardening start with soil, it is more forgiving and tends to yield great results with little effort. But if you have a hankering for getting technical and needing to buy expensive gadgets then hydro can produce fast heavy harvests.

Let us start with lighting since it is one of the most important. We suggest for rapid growth of most crops that you choose either a 600 or 1000 watt light for your main garden area, although a 400 watt will work it is not large enough to use for supplemental feeding of a family. More information on lighting is available here. The problem with HID lighting is the higher the wattage the more heat it puts out. Next you will need to get a reflector to aim all that light towards your garden, more on reflectors here.

Soil gardening is the easiest way to a sucessful garden. Start with clean high quality organic soil. The cheapest containers are bags, we carry plastic and the new "smart pots" which really make your root system fill up your container by air pruning the roots as they reach the sides of the bag...a huge benefit to the plant. Container size is judged by how long you expect the plant to remain in that container, 1 gal per month of growth tends to be large enough for most plants. You can fit 25 5gallon bags under a 1000watt light (packed), 16 under a 600watt (packed) Use a waterproof tarp (available at your local home supply store) under your garden to catch run-off water.

Nutrients are crucial to plant growth and harvest size. Only buy high quality plant food for your indoor garden. Below is a table of our nutrient selections.

Nutrients

We are here to HELP! A PPM meter measures the amount of dissolved solids in your nutrient solution. Purchasing a PPM meter is one of the best investments a serious gardener can make. Without a PPM meter measuring more than 1 gallon of nutrient solution becomes a hassle. By using a PPM meter you are taking all the guess work and tidious measuring out of the nutrient mixing process, by measuring the overall strength of the solution. Remember to alwaystake a base reading of the water before mixing nutrients in, all sources of water except R/O water will have some dissolved solids to start with.

Control pH by checking your nutrient solution just before applying it to your garden, a pH meter is the simplest way to check and maintain pH of your water and your soil. We highly recommend purchasing a ph meter/tds meter and a separate soil ph meter, it is a small amount to pay to be sure you are feeding your plants properly. Nutrients are brocken down in soil and this only occurs at the proper pH level. Adjust your nutrient solution pH to adjust your soil pH. Most crops tend to do well when watered with a nutrient solution having a pH of 6.5-6.8 any higher or lower and some plant won't be able to absorb the nutrients needed for fast growth. Adjust the pH level with "pH up" and "pH down", slowly add a dilluted mix of either up or down to your nutrient solution to obtain the proper pH level.

Well those are the basics needed to get you started with your indoor garden. For more info click here...
